NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory LSST Camera Focal Plane

This photo shows the 3,200-megapixel focal plane of NSF–DOE Vera C. Rubin Observatory’s LSST Camera, under construction at SLAC. In a few years, the camera will begin taking images of the Chilean night sky, collecting 20 terabytes of data every night. An extension of the Stanford Research Computing Facility (SRCF) at SLAC will host Rubin Observatory’s U.S. data facility (USDF) for the handling of the gigantic data stream.
