As deputy director for projects and infrastructure, Vitaly Yakimenko oversees the Project Management Office and is responsible for scientific and infrastructure project management and campus planning to ensure successful delivery for SLAC’s mission needs. He is tasked with maintaining project excellence and ensuring integrated resource plans are in place to align key projects, facilities, and infrastructure needs and priorities.
Yakimenko began his career at the Budker Institute for Nuclear Physics, in the Russian city of Novosibirsk, after earning his PhD in accelerator physics. He worked briefly at DESY in Hamburg, Germany, and GSI Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt, before joining Brookhaven National Laboratory as a postdoctoral researcher. He went on to hold various roles there, including Accelerator Test Facility director in 2004.
During his time at Brookhaven, he undertook major upgrades to its advanced accelerator scientific programs. His research focused on the physics of beams, intense radiation sources, free-electron lasers and the interaction of charged particles, laser beams and plasmas.
He joined SLAC in 2012 as director of the Facility for Advanced Accelerator Experimental Tests (FACET) and served as project director for the FACET-II upgrade. He successfully led the SuperCDMS project and has helped develop and support project leadership for both the Large Scale Collaboration Center and Detector Microfabrication Facility projects.
